About Maura


 

Maura was born in Portsmouth, Virginia and travelled around the world with her parents as the daughter of a Naval Officer. Her parents retired to the Gulf Breeze area near Pensacola and she completed high school there. Maura then graduated from Pensacola Junior College (now Pensacola State College) and she received her B.S. Degree in Marketing from The University of West Florida. Upon graduation Maura worked as a Sales Representative for several companies including Kraft Foods, Kimberly Clark and Nabisco. She met her husband, Ron playing church volleyball and they were married in 1990. Their son, Zach was born in 1994 and daughter, Sarah arrived in 1997. In 1998, Ron’s position as a Human Resources Specialist was transferred from Pensacola NAS to Redstone Arsenal.

Zach and Sarah both attended West Madison Elementary, Liberty Middle and graduated from Bob Jones High School. Both children played soccer for Bob Jones and Zach went on to play for four years at Berry College. He graduated from Berry College in 2016 with a B.A. Degree in Secondary Education and Political Science. He received a Fulbright Scholarship and taught English in Krompachny, Slovakia for the 2016-2017 school year where he also played semiprofessional soccer. He currently lives in Atlanta and teaches Social Studies (AP World History, IB Theory of Knowledge and IB Global Politics) and is the Boy’s JV Soccer Coach and Goalkeeper Coach for Centennial High School in Roswell. Zach and his high school sweetheart, the former Megan Benefield, married in May, 2020. Sarah graduated from Marion Military Institute in  2017. She was recently promoted to Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force serving as a Maintenance Management Analysis Specialist and is stationed at Joint AFB Charleston, South Carolina.

Maura has been a community volunteer in many areas. She was the first female baseball coach at Palmer Park. She has also coached AYSO Soccer, Upward Basketball and softball at WESTCO. She has also been a PTA Officer at her children’s three schools, substitute school teacher and most exciting, served as crossing guard at Bob Jones High School for several years. Maura was also the Chair of the Asbury Community Thrift Store, which since its inception, has given over $1,000,000 back into the Madison Missions Community. In 2016, she was elected to the Madison City Council representing District 1. She was reelected with over 65% of the vote in 2020.

Maura works full time in her position on the  Madison City Council. Her main objectives are communication and service to her District. In her spare time Maura enjoys playing golf with Ron, reading and participating yearly in the 100 Mile Swim Challenge. She and Ron are also involved with several animal rescue groups providing safe harbor for kittens and cats. Maura maybe more so than Ron.
